SWC says that "Wabe" is a word from the poem "Jabberwocky," which apparently comes from an ancient scroll called "Through the Looking Glass." In context it could be thought to mean a lawn or greensward.

Just thought I'd mention that.

Indeed.

Wabe – The grass plot around a sundial. It is called a "wabe" because it goes a long WAy BEfore it, and a long WAy BEhind it, and a long WAy BEyond it on each side.
